TOINE THYS ORLANDO / Betterlands / N° cat. HR034 - UPC 5063292173345
Toine Thys's music is characterised by both a unique identity and a desire to create original music of diverse geographical and cultural origins. While we're all familiar with his trio compositions, with 3 albums to his name in over ten years of collaborations, we've also rediscovered him over the past few years in innovative projects such as OVERSEAS, a cosmopolitan group that blends Arabic music and Brazilian rhythms.
We also know Toine Thys as a keen fan of electronic music, with GURU.FARM (a.k.a. DERvISH) or solo under the name LoFi-Sufi, where he combines the tenor saxophone and electronic sounds in collaborations with dance and the circus arts.
He also works as a sideman alongside Belgian musicians such as Chris Joris, Laïla Amezian, Laurent Blondiau, Angelo Moustapha, Bram Weijters CRAZY MEN and Antoine Pierre URBEX, as well as musicians from abroad: Robert Jukic (Slovenia), Bounce Trio (FR), Bram Weijters CRAZY MEN Antoine Pierre URBEX, Zouratié Kone (Burkina).
After the eponymous album 'Orlando' in 2021, the group returns here in a new version with a new drummer, Teun Verbruggen, and a music even more focused on ensemble playing.
Rather than cascades of notes and fireworks, the focus here is on exploring sound and space. Some tracks are serious and solemn, while others are imbued with joy and hope. Toine Thys also uses electronics to sample his saxophone, superimpose it and process it over several tracks, a way of expanding the music into larger spaces.
